West China School of Medicine and West China Hospital, Sichuan University WCSMWCH, also known as Huaxi Hospital or the International Hospital of Sichuan Province, is a prestigious institution located in Chengdu city, within the Sichuan province of the People's Republic of China. A globally recognized medical center, it boasts a rich history that spans over more than a century.
1892: The hospital originated with Dr. Omar L. Kilborn and later became Renji and Cunren Hospital.
1914: It transitioned into the Medical School of West China Union University, marking a significant milestone in its academic lineage.
1953: The institution evolved into Sichuan Medical College, continuing to serve as a hub for medical knowledge and education.
1985: Renamed agn as West China University of Medical Sciences WCMU, the college was further transformed under this title.
Present Day: Today, it stands as WCSMWCH, carrying forward its legacy of excellence in medical sciences.
The official name for the institution is West China School of Medicine and West China Hospital, Sichuan University. This prestigious institution is situated at #37 Guoxue Alley within Wuhou District, Chengdu city, Province of Sichuan, People's Republic of China. Founded in 1892, it is led by President Professor Luo Fengming and Party Secretary Professor Li Zhengchi.
The hospital features a total of 4,300 beds with over 12,000 employees. In the year 2023, it conducted approximately 251,000 surgeries and treated more than 8.9 million outpatients and emergency room visits. The institution boasts an impressive array of departments including 54 specialized centers.
Notably recognized for its expertise in areas such as adult living donor liver transplantation, lung cancer surgery, minimally invasive therapy, cardiac intervention, severe pancreatitis treatment combining Traditional Chinese Medicine TCM with Western medicine, minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery, clinical anesthesia, medical imaging, nuclear medicine, and more.
The mn campus encompasses 4100 beds while the Wenjiang campus holds an additional 200 beds. Shangjin Campus is also part of its portfolio which comprises 1170 beds under trusteeship. Lastly, there's a Tianfu campus with plans for an expanded bed capacity up to 1200.
The institution offers comprehensive education programs with over 3,300 undergraduate students enrolled, including approximately 600 international students, alongside more than 3000 graduates.
Clinical Medicine: Offered in both a 5-year and an 8-year program, along with MBBS Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery studies.
Other programs include Nursing, Laboratory Science, Optometry and Visual Science, Rehabilitation Medicine, Medical Imaging Technology.
It is supported by a highly qualified team including 496 doctoral advisors and 639 master advisors who contribute to its academic prowess.
The hospital has consistently been recognized nationally and internationally. It has secured the second position among China's best hospitals in recent years according to The Best Hospital in China rankings 2009-2022, by Fudan University. This ranking is further enhanced by its performance of #1 in China, 12th worldwide in Nature Index 2023.
