Background:
Benign mature teratomas are rare neoplasms that often present in the abdominal region; however, their occurrence elsewhere is less common. This report highlights a unique case of a benign mature teratoma located in the facial fronto-temporal region in an adolescent.
Case Presentation:
A 16-year-old male presented to our department with a slowly growing, pnless lesion on his left frontal area for several months. The patient's medical history was unremarkable until this presentation.
Clinical Evaluation and Findings:
Upon physical examination, the patient displayed a well-circumscribed, non-ter soft mass measuring approximately 3 cm in diameter. Imaging studies comprised of computed tomography CT scans showed a homogenous, hypoechoic lesion with mixed densities compatible with mature teratoma components such as bone fragments, cartilage, and cystic elements.
Diagnosis:
The clinical presentation, imaging characteristics, and the histological findings upon surgical excision confirmed a diagnosis of benign mature teratoma located in the facial fronto-temporal region.
Management:
Surgical resection was planned under general anesthesia with careful dissection to ensure complete removal. The tumor was excised en bloc along with its surrounding connective tissue for an uneventful recovery post-operatively, immediate complications or recurrence detected during follow-up visits.
Discussion:
Benign mature teratomas are rare and often mistaken as benign soft tissue tumors like lipomas until proper histological diagnosis is made. The facial location is exceedingly uncommon; thus, this case adds to the limited literature on such presentations. Appropriate surgical management ensures complete excision without risk of tumor recurrence or complications.
:
This report illustrates a rare manifestation of benign mature teratoma in an atypical location facial fronto-temporal region in an adolescent male. This highlights the importance of considering rare differential diagnoses, particularly when dealing with unusual clinical presentations that may challenge standard understanding and management strategies.
