Mian Duo considers herself to possess a fr degree of beauty, yet she longed for perfection – the kind that her television idols, with their surgically enhanced features, embodied. So three years ago, this petite woman with a height of 1.65 meters and a weight of just 41 kilograms, embarked on an international journey from China to South Korea's upscale Gangnam district to undergo jaw and cheekbone adjustments through a procedure known as bone sculpting.
Under the anesthesia for seven hours, Mian lay oblivious as her plastic surgeon meticulously removed parts of her cheekbones and jaw through incisions in her mouth. The remning segments were subsequently pushed into position to create a softer facial contour before being fixed by sutures. Her recovery period lasted six months. Fast forward two years, and she sought further transformation – this time opting for breast augmentation that elevated her cup size from a small B to a more noticeable C.
In today's China, where young people have grown up in the shadow of television screens filled with celebrities who embody ideal beauty through surgery, procedures like these are no longer shrouded in stigma.
Technology has evolved, yet its influence on teenagers remns a subject of heated debate. The launch of a 'dumbphone' – a device featuring only basic functionalities like calling and texting – by the iconic Barbie brand for her 65th birthday anniversary provide an escape route from the constant pull of social media applications.
However, priced at $129 in the US the equivalent price of this digital detox device, the question arises: Does it offer enough value beyond its novelty and branding?
The device could attract those seeking a unique gadget, as opposed to a full-fledged smartphone. But does it truly address the deeper issues related to technology use? Technology experts advocate teaching digital literacy skills that enable young people to navigate their online environments responsibly instead of merely limiting access.
, the allure of beauty enhancement procedures and innovative technological solutions highlights our collective quest for perfection and safety in an increasingly digitized world. It prompts us to reflect on how we educate future generations about technology use and personal identity.
