Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery at Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, the affiliated hospital of Nanjing University Medical School, is the pioneering institution dedicated to providing professional care for burn patients and their recovery, plastic surgery, and aesthetic procedures in Jiangsu province.

We proudly hold the distinction as a key clinical department in Jiangsu province and Nanjing city, recognized as a provincial Science, Education Health project flagship unit. We are proud members of national Vocational Skin Grafting VSD trning center, National Diabetic-related Wound Trning Center, and the Chinese Treatment Center for International Operation Smile Project.

Our department is the first to confer Ph.D degrees in both Plastic Surgery and Burn Surgery within Jiangsu province. With faculty that has been conferred several university-level PhDs and Master’s degrees from institutions including Nanjing University, Southeastern University, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Xuzhou Medical University, Jiangsu University, and Peking Union Medical College.

Established in the 1970s through generations of perseverance, our journey began with Prof. Peng Wang and Prof. Shengfan Li pioneering burn therapy techniques, establishing a ward equipped with 22 beds in 1976 followed by an additional burn ward with 20 beds in 1983. Our faculty expanded to include 13 members including 1 associate professor, 1 atting physician, and 4 residents in 1990.

Under Prof. Shengfan Li’s leadership, the team successfully救治thousands of patients suffering from burns while pioneering several firsts such as using allogenic skin grafting, scar skin graft procedures, and saving the life of Chenghua Ha, a widely recognized fireman hero. We also initiated the Jiangsu Operation Smile project in 1996.

In the 2000s, Prof. Qian Tan joined our team after visiting Leipzig St. George Hospital in Germany, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Duke University in USA. Currently serving as Vice Director of several professional associations including Chinese Aesthetic and Plastic Association, Chinese Rhinoplasty Association, Chinese Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery Association, and President of the Pan Asia Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Prof. Qian Tan leads our department with over 35 years in practice.

Our research activities have been supported by various grants including twice from National Natural Science Foundation of China, as well as numerous provincial or municipal foundation-funded projects. Our team has received several awards such as second-class technical prizes at both provincial and municipal levels as well as scientific and technological accolades from the National Plastic Association.

We publish extensively in academic journals like Burns Trauma, Chinese Journal of Burns, and contribute to the field through our publication record which includes more than 300 papers with numerous excellent paper awards received. Our patent portfolio boasts over seven patents, while eleven professional books have been published under our name.

International collaborations with countries including the USA, Germany, and Japan further cement our reputation as a leader in global medical education and research.

We provide comprehensive trning for undergraduate students across several institutions such as Nanjing University, Southeastern University, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Xuzhou Medical University, Jiangsu University, Peking Union Medical College, Zunyi Medical University. Each year we mentor approximately 8-10 Master’s, Ph.D., and international students.
