At our dedicated center for cleft and craniofacial conditions, we take great pride in offering a comprehensive range of services tlored to the needs of children born with a cleft palate. Our specialized team consists of highly experienced professionals who are committed to providing accurate diagnosis, effective treatment plans, and long-term care support for your family.
A child with a cleft palate has an opening or split on the roof of their mouth, which may occur indepently or in combination with a cleft lip. Early intervention is key, as we treat children starting at approximately twelve months old using a combination of nasal alveolar molding and multiple surgeries, typically initiated around the age of one year following initial treatments for cleft lip.
Our approach to care for children with cleft palate involves a multi-faceted strategy that includes:
Palate Expander: An innovative device used by our specialists is placed on your child's palate to expand the jaw and provide more space for adult teeth. Suitable for children aged 5 to 7 years, as they are losing their baby teeth.
Alveolar Bone Graft: In some cases, when appropriate – often recommed in conjunction with initial surgeries for cleft lip and palate after a few years of age – our team may recomm adding bone to the gum ridge. This procedure is typically carried out between ages 7-9.
Mandibular Distraction and Maxillary Distraction Osteogenesis: These surgical procedures are offered when necessary, focusing on correcting misaligned jaws or exting narrow lower jaws for children who face breathing challenges due to their unique facial structure.
Palate Fistula Repr: When an opening develops between the mouth and nose – a condition known as a fistula – our skilled surgeons employ specialized techniques to close this passage.
Orthodontic Care and Specialized Treatments: Deping on your child's specific situation, various orthodontic procedures may be necessary for reshaping teeth, jaws, and mouths. Your dedicated craniofacial orthodontist will discuss the best options with you.
